Ocha-tsubo Procession

The Narai-shuku Station Festival, the largest event in Narai-shuku, is held every year on the first Saturday and Sunday in June. In the Edo period, the shogun’s tea to be delivered from Uji, Kyoto to the Tokugawa family traveled along the Nakasendo. This dignified procession is called the Ocha-tsubo Dochu. It is a grand festival for the whole Narai-shuku. A procession unique to a genuine post town.

Ice Candle Festival

The old townscape, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, is illuminated by handmade ice candles, creating a fantastical world. There are light parades by local kindergarteners and elementary/junior high school students and a Setsubun bean-throwing event, and fireworks are launched at the climax. Why not enjoy Narai-shuku’s special once-a-year night?
